Split head mattresses are on an upward trend for 2025. We saw evidence of this at Las Vegas Market and NMG’s PrimeTime expo over the past year.

But the concept of a split, adjustable mattress is not new. Full split mattresses and adjustable beds have been available for decades — and demand continues to grow as consumers understand the connection between quality sleep and overall health. And part of quality sleep is finding a solution that works for partners who may have different sleep preferences. To prevent “sleep divorce,” many couples are investing in — or more open to considering — a split mattress option.

So, what are the options? Let’s break down the two main split mattress categories to answer a few FAQs and determine the type of consumer who would be interested in each one.

Split Head Mattress: Benefits and Considerations

What is a split head mattress?

A split head mattress is divided only at the top to offer independent adjustability for head elevation on each side. The bottom portion of the mattress is not split and remains completely horizontal all the way across.

Who benefits from a split head mattress?

Aside from comfort preferences when sleeping, a split head mattress can address specific health-related issues, including acid reflux, sleep apnea, chronic back pain and snoring.

And, for those who prefer to stay elevated while reading or watching TV in bed, a split head option can provide greater support than leaning against the headboard or using pillows.

Does a split head mattress require an adjustable base?

The short answer is no. Because the bottom half is fully connected, a split top mattress can be placed on a standard bed frame. However, utilizing an adjustable base designed for this type of mattress can provide extra support to fully experience the benefits of the split head feature.

The best adjustable base for a split head mattress is one that allows each side to be adjusted independently for head and upper body elevation.

Does a split head mattress require special sheets?

Regular fitted sheets are not recommended, as they are not designed to fit when the two sides are not in alignment. Thankfully, now that split head mattresses are more popular, the availability of split head sheets has increased.

Several Nationwide Marketing Group bedding vendors now offer split head fitted sheets, including BEDGEAR, Cariloha, DreamFit, and PureCare.

What is the cost of a split head mattress?

While the average cost of a split head mattress does run higher than other traditional mattress options, it can be more cost effective than purchasing a mattress fully split down the middle.

Adjustable bases are another cost consideration that would add to the total price, if desired.

Full Split Mattress: Benefits and Considerations

Now that you are familiar with the key features and options for a split head mattress, let’s talk about a full split.

What is a full split mattress?

A full split mattress is essentially two separate mattresses positioned side-by-side on the same bed frame. Typically, a split king is made up of two twin XL mattresses (38” x 80”) and a split queen utilizes two twin mattresses (30” x 80”).

Because each side is completely independent, full split mattresses can be adjusted for the upper and lower body, and even the mattress type can be different. For example, one partner

Who benefits from a full split mattress?

Couples who sleep very differently and need individualized support and comfort levels are likely to consider a full split mattress. A full split is also beneficial for situations where one partner has a medical or physical condition that impacts the upper and/or lower half of the body.

Examples include lower back pain, general body aches, circulation issues, inflammation, heartburn, and acid reflux.

Does a full split mattress require an adjustable base?

Technically no. Because a full split mattress places two separate twin or twin XL mattresses side-by-side, partners may only want to choose mattresses with different firmness levels. However, for those who also want the option to elevate the upper and lower sections of the mattress — with separate controls for each side — an adjustable base is necessary.

Does a full split mattress require special sheets?

No. Any sheets designed for either a twin or twin XL mattress will work — depending on which size a couple decides to purchase.

What is the cost of a full split mattress?

Generally, the cost of a full split mattress is a more costly investment than a traditional mattress or split head — mainly because it requires purchasing two separate mattresses.

Overall cost can vary, depending on the size of the two mattresses and the type preferred. For example, one partner may select a coil mattress, while the other chooses a memory foam or hybrid option.

And, of course, adjustable bases will add to the total cost and can vary in price range, depending on the features included.

Do You Need a Special Mattress for an Adjustable Base Bed?

Finally, let’s address this question, as it is likely to be asked by your customers — or even your own sales team. Again, the simple answer is no. It is not necessary to buy a specialized mattress designed for adjustable bases. But, in order for the mattress to actually adjust, it does need to be compatible.

Below are several considerations to ensure a mattress does work with an adjustable base bed.

  • Most memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses are compatible.
  • The ideal thickness is typically 13-inches or less.
  • Not all coil mattresses will work. For example, pocketed coils may provide more flexibility than open coils.

How to Help a Customer Choose the Right Adjustable Bed

With all the options available and possible confusion surrounding the value and benefits of split mattresses and adjustable base beds, it is important to position your business as a team of experts and guides, ready to help.

Understanding shoppers’ unique needs is paramount in the process of closing a sale that also generates the ultimate level of customer satisfaction. As more consumers prioritize wellness and make the connection between sleep and overall health, your mission as a mattress retailer should be focused on selling optimal sleep.

Here are a few ways to ensure that your customers find the right bed for their health and personal preferences.

  • Ask questions to identify any sleep issues and budgetary restraints
  • Focus on mattresses and frames that solve those issues and fit ideal price points
  • Share financing options to make premium options more attainable
