Sports fans around the country are gearing up to watch two of TV’s most popular athletic events — Super Bowl LX (February 8) and the 2026 Winter Olympics (February 6 – 22). And “gearing up” might just include shopping for a new TV.
According to Nielsen, last year’s Super Bowl had an estimated 127.7 million viewers, making it the most-watched Super Bowl in history. And Statista data shows that 31.3 million Americans watched the Summer 2024 Olympic games.

The Best Time of Year to Buy a TV
It’s no secret that January, just before the Super Bowl, is a prime period for consumers to find a deal on a new TV. Whether they plan to host a party for the big game or simply want to save money, savvy shoppers and sports fans are likely on the hunt for an upgrade.
While we’re on the subject, below are the four main times of year considered best for consumers to buy
- Pre-Super Bowl Sunday (January and February)
- Spring (March and April) — As new models are introduced, manufacturers may reduce prices on older models to help clear inventory.
- Amazon Prime Day (July) — With other retailers also jumping on the Prime Day bandwagon, this multi-day sales blitz typically includes major electronics.
- Black Friday / Cyber Monday (November) — The five-day period from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday is generally considered the best time of year to make a TV purchase.
How Often People Typically Replace a TV
A 2023 Circana study revealed that, on average, people replace a TV every 6.6 years. Given that TV sales surged unexpectedly six years ago during the pandemic, it’s quite possible that many of those 2020 buyers are now considering an upgrade.
Even if you miss the sports enthusiasts this season, the first quarter has only just begun. Between the bargain hunters and those ready to invest in a bigger, better screen, there’s a lot of game left to play this year.
